Tamura Koichi

(Japanese 1918-1987)

Tamura Koichi was a Japanese potter highly influenced by the Mingei movement, and designated Living National Treasure for tetsu-e techniques of iron underglaze painting.

Tamura Koichi graduated from the department of crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts and went on to study under Tomimoto Kenkichi in 1946. Koichi was also influenced by Hamada Shoji and the Mingei movement, working in Sano which is not far from Mashiko. He is recognised for his iron underglaze decoration (tetsu-e), a technique for which he was designated Living National Treasure.
