Ichino Shigeyoshi

(Japanese 1942-2011)

Ichino Shigeyoshi was a Japanese potter born into a potting family in Tamba who is well known in the UK as he travelled here numerous times to work and exhibit at Leach Pottery.

Ichino Shigeyoshi was the son of Tamba potter Ichino Tanso. When Janet Leach went to Japan she spent time in Tamba at their family pottery, and invited Ichino Shigeyoshi to spend time at Leach Pottery. He travelled to the UK in 1969 to work at Leach Pottery, going on to travel to Villenaux in France in 1971 where he oversaw the construction of a kiln. Upon returning to Japan, he held a number of solo exhibitions. He remains well-known in the UK due to his time working here and subsequent visits, including for an exhibition with Janet Leach at the Amalgam Gallery in London in 1981.
