Charles Bound is a potter now living and working in Wales whose rugged wood-fired works focus on expressing the elemental nature of clay.
Charles Bound had perhaps an unconventional path to becoming a potter, coming to ceramics later in his life. He was born and spent his early life in New York, before graduating with a degree in English Literature and then moving to Africa in 1968. Based in Kenya he spent the following years travelling, teaching and writing. It wasn't until 1983 that he turned his hands to clay. He went on to build a wood-fired kiln on his farm in Wales where he still lives and works.
Bound approaches making in an experimental way, 'letting go and allowing things to happen'. Working on both the wheel and hand building, he often brings sections together and incorporates found objects. His works are fired in a traditional, anagama kiln, ‘they come out bearing the scars and encrusted deposits from a protracted battle with smoke, ash and rivers of flame.’
