Ken Eastman

(British b.1960)

Ken Eastman, born in 1960, is a pivotal figure in British ceramics. His artistic journey began with his studies at Edinburgh College of Art (1979-83) and the Royal College of Art, London (1984-87), laying the foundation for a prolific career marked by numerous honours and international recognition.

Eastman's work revolves around the concept of the vessel, utilising it as a vehicle for expression and form. Through the medium of ceramics, he seamlessly merges the roles of builder and painter, exploring shape, structure, tone, and colour. Alison Britton aptly describes his work as a journey into increasing abstraction, playing with both form and surface, culminating in a harmonious blend of sculpture and painting.

His mastery extends beyond the studio, as Eastman has lectured and taught at various colleges and universities throughout the UK. Currently serving as an Associate Lecturer in Design Thinking at the Open University, he continues to inspire and shape the next generation of artists.

In addition to his studio practice, Eastman's work is held in prestigious public collections worldwide, including The Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. He has also been honoured with awards such as the 'Premio Faenza' in Italy (1995) and the 'Gold Medal' at the World Ceramic Exposition 2001 in Korea.
